Fukui Seiichi

Fukui Seiichi, 8th Dan Hanshi

He was a prominent figure in the Kanagawa Prefecture Iaido Federation and the Tamiya-ryu branch of the All Japan Kendo Federation (ZNKR) in and around Odawara. As an outstanding direct student (jiki-deshi) of Tsumaki Seirin (14th sōke), he carried forward the original Odawara Shōrinkan tradition within a broader, federational framework.

It is thanks to the work of Fukui Seiichi Sensei that the deeper teachings (Okugishū) of Tamiya-ryū survived and were systematically passed down among high-ranking ZNKR iaidō practitioners in Kanagawa.

Fukui Seiichi played a leading role in organizing the annual Hakone Taikai. The Hakone Taikai (居合道全国選抜八段戦箱根大会) is an invitational tournament for 8th Dan teachers held at the Hakone Shrine. It was not merely a competition, but also a commemoration and tribute to a historical event: the revenge of the Soga brothers.

The technical standards of the Tamiya-ryū dōjōs operating in Kanagawa Prefecture (Odawara, Yokohama, Yokosuka) are built upon the teachings of Fukui Seiichi Sensei.
